The “Vote” Is In

ballot box 150x150 The Vote Is In

Thank you. No, really, *you*, whoever *you* are.

With 68% of Precincts Reporting…

Well, there you have it. After 2 weeks of furious activity, the “vote” is in. No, seriously, the vote is in.

To explain…I decided to put up a poll to make things easier on visitors when attempting to guide my site plans, and it appears (after rigorous auditing by the Law Offices of Valiente & Hernandez) that only one legitimate vote came in. Sorry, honey, but the contest was only available in the contiguous United States and not to the family members of bryonsheffield.com employees.

So what did that vote ultimately dictate?

Basically, it went with the easiest selection of the multiple choices, which was really no selection at all. The vote suggested that I just write about all of the things about which I am passionate and with which I have some experience.

And that is exactly what I will do.

A Light in the Dark

Have you ever been alone in the dark? Not the dim, but the real dark. The inky black stuff that prevents you from seeing even an inch in front of your face. I have.

When you find yourself in this kind of dark, you really have two options:

A: Sit around, complacent, waiting for someone else to provide you with some light…or…

B: Get off your ass and stumble around blindly until you find some light of your own.

Based on that single glorious vote (and perhaps a little bit of recent epiphany) I am going to go with option B. I would be remiss, of course, if I did not point out that – like any good Chinese menu – there was a bit of option A as well. Certainly, Justin Kownacki’s generosity, when he asked “what if you could program someone’s blog“, qualifies as “providing some light”. So again, Justin, if you are listening, thanks!

Listen, I’m Excited Too

Just be careful about getting too excited, because the fact is that I will be stumbling around here for a bit until I find my own light. When Justin mentioned in his post:

See, Bryon’s a smart guy. He knows the web is full of white noise, and he doesn’t want to add to it.

I appreciated both the compliment and his recognition that I’m not terribly interested in just shouting uselessly into the darkness.

What I am interested in, however, is whispering to myself and to those fortunate few who stumble through the darkness and into my little “corner” until I, or we, determine the direction I head to find some light — and produce something unique.

The Captain Has Turned on the Fasten Seatbelt Sign

So, sit back, relax and enjoy the flight. We may be on a rickety puddle-jumper with no lights or instrumentation at 3:30am with only five of us on board, but we have clearance and we’re going to take the runway nonetheless.

If you bump into me here or find the Ironshef on Twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn, reach out and connect. There’s no telling where this baby will land once we make it out of the darkness.

“The vote suggested that I just write about all of the things about which I am passionate and with which I have some experience.”

I recently came to this realization as well. All of the make-your-blog-huge advice says to drill down to a specific niche and focus on that, but whenever I see blogs that listen to that advice, they get boring pretty fast. Writing what you know and love is far more interesting for the writer and the reader.

Thanks for stopping by, Matt. I appreciate your opinion.

I'm sure, at some point, order will emerge from the chaos, but for now I'll just keep it open and avoid aggressive promotion until I can differentiate signal from noise.
