My Plans for This Site

The title of this post no doubt gives you the impression that what follows is an explanation, however detailed, of what I intend to do with bryonsheffield.com. It is, in fact, not.

Instead, I will offer a recent Twitter conversation with @JustinKownacki as a hint into what I “might” do with this site. If you don’t know who Justin Kownacki is, jump out of a window or into traffic. Now.

OK, don’t do that. That is really dramatic and extremely wasteful. Unless you suck. In that case, go ahead and do it anyway. Either way, if you give a shit about internet marketing in general or blogging and social media in particular, Justin is worth paying attention to.

Without further adieu, the [brief] conversation:

Justin Kownacki sent this direct message in response to a comment I left on his blog.

My response to Justin.

Justin's re-response.

So, there you go. Clear, huh? Good. The point is, I don’t really have any idea what I want to do with this domain. I could talk about all or none of: family, search engine optimization, video games, raising four boys (including twins), soccer, golf, social media, fantasy sports, entrepreneurship, education, and the list goes on. They are all things with which I have experience and varying levels of passion.

I just don’t know. And not knowing, for me, is enough to keep me silent here. Because if I do something, I aim to do it to the absolute best of my ability. And at present, I just don’t feel the driving motivation that brings me to my best. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but I need to at least feel like I am aiming for perfect. Right now my aim sucks.

If you happen upon this and would like to leave a suggestion, please feel free. Or just leave a comment and tell me what you are thinking. Or let me know if there is something I can do to help you. While this site might not give you any idea about what I do (eventually, it will, I think), you can always find and connect with me on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. Those social “outposts” should make it pretty clear what my professional focus is and what some of my personal interests are.

Of course, you are always welcome to check back here periodically to determine if I’ve gotten off my lazy ass and made something of myself, digitally speaking, of course.

EDIT: Based on Justin’s continued support, I’ve put together a quick poll to give you an idea of some of the things I *could* blog about. Use this if it helps. Of course, you are still welcome to freestyle in the comments. I’m paying attention.

What would you be MOST interested in for April's blog focus?

NOTE: The site ViperChill, mentioned in Justin’s first comment, is the personal blog of Glen Allsopp and covers his approach to online marketing, specifically viral marketing. If these things interest you, you will be well served to check out ViperChill. Glen’s approach kicks ass.

First of all, the name of your blog needs to be Iron Shef. Because. It's kickass.

Ditch the cherry, girly, I-wear-socks-with-little-ruffles-on-them blog name.

    That is all.

So, I'm a huge fan of the write-a-bunch-of-words-together-with-dashes movement. As such, I deem your comment to be ultra rad.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bridget. The foo-foo title is the stock image from the theme I'm using and, like just about everything with this blog, I have yet to update it. Point taken, though. The flat-out awesomeness of the Ironshef is unmistakably diluted by “cherry truffle”. Perhaps I should inquire with Nick over at Elegant Themes why his totally kick ass WordPress themes include one titled “cherry truffle”.

I digress…thanks again, Bridget, for stopping by and droppin' your wisdom on my blog-to-be. I appreciate it.

People dig easy choices. What if you supplied them with a multiple choice option?

Select 3 or 4 things you COULD blog about, if you felt anyone would care enough to read what you wrote. Then let them vote. Invite them to subscribe via email, so they can see what you come up with. And then, after your test period (say, 2-4 weeks), do two things:

    * Post what you learned from the experience in terms of writing, feedback, traffic, thought process, etc., and

    * Offer another 3 or 4 options for the NEXT month (if that approach still holds your interest).

Ultimately, people want you to entertain or enlighten them all by yourself. They want you to inspire them, not the other way around. Winding up someone else's blog may feel too much like work.

But until you have something burning a hole in your mind, the least you can do is give the people what they (say they) want, as easily and engagingly as possible.

Thanks for the continued support, Justin. I've inserted a really simple poll into the post to make things a little easier on those folks inclined to offer their opinion.

Excellent way to chime in! I probably wouldn't have posted a comment, but I love me some multiple choice options! ;)

    Good luck finding your niche!
