And the Hilarity Ensues with Old Spice Spoofs
So, I’ve made no secret about how much I love the recent Old Spice video marketing campaign. Sheer brilliance. Of course, as is always the case here at bryonsheffield.com, you are more than welcome to argue that point so that I am provided the opportunity to smite you soundly with its unfettered scrumtrulescence.
Watch This Old Spice Spoof Video
Plenty of these spoofs of the Old Spice commercial have started rolling in and several publishers have called your attention to them. This one happens to be my hands-down favorite. If you haven’t seen it yet, or even if you have, I think you’ll agree it’s pretty damn awesome.
Take a gander…
You with me on that?
Parallel awesomeness with the original version. Not better, but different, and equally kick ass. I mean, really, when you think about it, it’s hard to argue with how awesome this is considering that it was done to market a library.
The laptop is now a celestial sandwich here in the snack zone.
Awesome.
The Lesson Learned from the Old Spice Spoofs
There is definitely a moral to this story outside of just entertaining you. Which, it should be said, I really aim to do.
The moral here is that you don’t necessarily have to be original to get noticed. Sure, being an “original” content creator is cool and all, but the reality is: if you think hard enough just about anything “new” can be traced back to an “original” source. So, don’t hesitate to make the connection clearer. Just make sure that your “original” derivation is good stuff, or else we’ll all just heckle you as a hack.
- What clear derivative work have you seen lately that worked for you (parodies or even more serious stuff)?
- How have you used someone else’s content/concept to create something “new”?
- If the moon were made of barbecue spareribs, would you eat ‘em (thanks, Will)?
