Starbucker’s SOBCon Songlist

Select a Song for Starbucker’s SOBCon Serenade

A gentleman who I’ve come to admire greatly has launched an interesting contest. Please take a moment to head over to Terry Starbucker‘s website to learn a little more about it…OR…just let the voting begin if you are already familiar with Terry and SOBCon.

So, How About a Songlist?

To explain things briefly, Terry is one of the driving forces behind SOBCon. He also digs himself some karaoke. So, in preparation for an upcoming event in Colorado, he put the call out to his audience to provide song suggestions for his inevitable performance. Those suggestions turned into a list which was put up for a vote

When I reviewed the list, I recognized most of the songs but realized there were a few I just couldn’t place or couldn’t remember. So, I created the following playlist to help others in the same boat.

Hopefully, this will assist those folks who’d like a little extra perspective before (or after) casting their votes. Heck, even if you don’t know Terry, SOBCon, or me for that matter…this is still a pretty rad collection of tunes.

Well, maybe not the rickrolling classic, but even worn out memes deserve their due, I suppose.

Enjoy!

What I Learned from this Little Exercise:

  • There are as many songs on this list from Broadway’s “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” (in which Johnny “Leadville” Brown is a main character) as there are from Bruce Springsteen.
  • Whitesnake actually has a Greatest Hits album.
  • Grooveshark totally kicks ass. This is quite possibly and very simply because the color scheme for the embedded player you see here is called “Monkey Trouble in Paradise” – which very well may be the name of my new band. I just need to see if Terry will be down with dual lead vocals.
  • Mark Mothersbaugh is just as cool doodling on Yo Gabba Gabba as he was fronting Devo.

Old Spice Spoof – You’re at the Library

And the Hilarity Ensues with Old Spice Spoofs

So, I’ve made no secret about how much I love the recent Old Spice video marketing campaign. Sheer brilliance. Of course, as is always the case here at bryonsheffield.com, you are more than welcome to argue that point so that I am provided the opportunity to smite you soundly with its unfettered scrumtrulescence.

Watch This Old Spice Spoof Video

Plenty of these spoofs of the Old Spice commercial have started rolling in and several publishers have called your attention to them. This one happens to be my hands-down favorite. If you haven’t seen it yet, or even if you have, I think you’ll agree it’s pretty damn awesome.

Take a gander…

You with me on that?

Parallel awesomeness with the original version. Not better, but different, and equally kick ass. I mean, really, when you think about it, it’s hard to argue with how awesome this is considering that it was done to market a library.

The laptop is now a celestial sandwich here in the snack zone.

Awesome.

The Lesson Learned from the Old Spice Spoofs

There is definitely a moral to this story outside of just entertaining you. Which, it should be said, I really aim to do.

The moral here is that you don’t necessarily have to be original to get noticed. Sure, being an “original” content creator is cool and all, but the reality is: if you think hard enough just about anything “new” can be traced back to an “original” source. So, don’t hesitate to make the connection clearer. Just make sure that your “original” derivation is good stuff, or else we’ll all just heckle you as a hack.

  • What clear derivative work have you seen lately that worked for you (parodies or even more serious stuff)?
  • How have you used someone else’s content/concept to create something “new”?
  • If the moon were made of barbecue spareribs, would you eat ‘em (thanks, Will)?
